Sustainability

Here at Crofter's, our heart is in the conservation of the environment and the wellbeing of all living things, be they bear, bee, or human. That's why we've focused on responsible farming and integrated sustainable processes into all facets of our business. We know that every little bit adds up to one big difference.

Our Organic Roots

When Crofter's Organic started in 1989, we sourced only organic fruits (and still do today). This early-adopted commitment is about health, yes, but also a world more. Literally. By refusing to source fruit from farms that use synthetic chemicals or GMOs, we're encouraging natural biodiversity in plants and wildlife, keeping the waterways clean, and maintaining the earths fertile soil. In 2009, the CFIA finally caught on to the greatness of organic and passed regulations. We continued doing what we were already doing.

A Bear-Approved Facility

We created a processing facility with an itty-bitty environmental footprint. We recycle 99% of our raw materials' packaging, and we have our very own wastewater treatment plant to conserve our precious water resources. Using natural biological processes and membranes we return 2.5+ million liters of wastewater for re-use in the plant every year! We also have systems that ‘recycle’ heat to warm our buildings and provide us with hot water, preventing the need to run a separate heating system. And of course, our glass jars are fully recyclable. So, help us complete the circle! If you'd like to learn more about our awesome systems for heat reclamation and groundwater use/re-use, visit our FAQs.

The Green Cane Project

Even though sugar isn't the star of our fruit spreads, we still want it to complement our organic fruits. We source our organic sugar from The Green Cane Project: An organization that focuses on sustainability producing organic sugar, preserving the environment and the health, happiness, and education of their workers. They pioneered harvesting sugar cane without burning the land and then went further by re-establishing biodiversity. The organization has restored soil to virgin rainforest standard, implemented reforestation using native plants, and maintain spaces for wildlife protection - Bear's favorite part.
